Limited Capacity seats available

In this practical workshop participants will become familiar with the Aerocene Explorer backpacks, and learn how to fly emissions-free tethered flights. Do note, Aerocene flights are by definition weather dependent and might not follow the exact schedule. Once the Sun is out, Aerocene naturally adjusts, heading out to sense the atmosphere without temporal limitations!

The Aerocene Explorer is a tethered-flight starter kit, which enables anyone to launch their own Aerocene sculpture and start exploring the skies. Using Do-It-Together (DIT) techniques, Aerocene changes how people investigate environmental, social and political questions. The Aerocene Explorer engages participants in a thinking-through-making activity, stimulating imagination and creativity, and imparting information about solar balloon flight, thermodynamic physics, meteorological science, and art practices. The Aerocene Explorer is currently being tested and developed by a global community of artists, geographers, philosophers, thinkers, speculative scientists, explorers, balloonists, technologists and other enthusiasts.

We will attach to the Explorer different payload options built during previous workshops, trying various sensors:
  • POLLUTION: An environmental monitor that measures the amount of particles in the atmosphere built with a cheap sensor that uses laser technology
  • LIFE IN THE AIR: A set of parachuting insect traps for taking multiple samples e.g. at different altitudes, areas or times of day
  • WEATHER: altitude-temperature-pressure-humidity
  • SIGNATURES: motion tracker to create signatures in the air towards independence from fossil fuels
  • MAPPING: aerial pictures and videos
  • INFRASOUND: infrasound detection
  • RADIO TRANSMISSION: including mesh network

The workshop is hosted by Aerocene community members Sasha Engelmann, Julieta Arancio, Tomás Saraceno, Erik Vogler and Joaquin Ezcurra.

Aerocene Foundation
Aerocene emerged with Museo Aero Solar in 2007, a collectively produced aerosolar sculpture made with reused plastic bags. The Aerocene Explorer was collaboratively invented in 2015, to enable anybody to sense the air in a new way. Together with the Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary... Read More →
