What are the social, ecological and political values of fuel-free flight? How can zero-emissions journeys inform the future of Fab Cities ? What new thinking of mobility and energy do initiatives like Aerocene trigger?

Aerocene sculptures fly by trapping energy inside their absorbent membranes. As air inside the membranes expands, this generates lift. This simple relationship between air, solar energy, temperature and pressure enables Aerocene sculptures to travel vast distances, reaching the edge of the stratosphere without burning fossil fuels and without using solar panels and batteries, and without helium, hydrogen and other rare gases. This workshop extends the conversation between Fab City and the Aerocene communities and invites participants to propose and to start co-formalise and co-build experiments with Aerocene sculptures we will later launch together in the context of the Fab City Summit.

Drawing on projects such as Aerocene at Villa Inflamable in Argentina and Launch and Recovery of Free (and tethered) zero emissions flight procedures and Citizen participation of radio spectrum, we actively discuss and reflect on open-source, multi-disciplinary practices within the global Aerocene community.

The meetup is hosted by Aerocene community members Sasha Engelmann, Julieta Arancio, Tomás Saraceno, Erik Vogler and Joaquin Ezcurra.

Aerocene Foundation
Aerocene emerged with Museo Aero Solar in 2007, a collectively produced aerosolar sculpture made with reused plastic bags. The Aerocene Explorer was collaboratively invented in 2015, to enable anybody to sense the air in a new way. Together with the Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary... Read More →
