To achieve the concept of Fab City, the city of Kamakura has been aiming to be a world-class sustainable city, and has been using local resources for city development in Japan. By participating in this global network as a city aiming to be a Fab City, henceforth the citizens, nonprofit organizations, educational institutes, companies, and government agencies will continue to work together to promote activities that will make Kamakura an even better place.

Making Sustainable Cities

Smart City developments are causing many technologies and solutions to integrate with convergence seen across with many resource areas including energy, water, sanitation, and other essential services. The public sector tries to deliver better services through fewer resources while businesses and citizens demand more.

This has driven governments to focus on building smarter and more sustainable cities, which are powered by technologies that can enable them. As makers, how can we as a community add value to the process of making the future cities more sustainable?

While Bhutan’s small size makes it difficult to attract foreign companies, it´s fertile ground for homegrown innovation. Over last three years we have gone all the way through this Fabcity Bhutan development journey laid out by Fabcity Bhutan team, the policy advocacy and technical inputs have been accompanied with intensive discussions at all levels from Prime Minister of Bhutan to farmers and school children’s to promote development pathways based on how the new digital technologies enable ordinary Bhutanese citizens to organize their mutual interactions so that they can develop their own social innovations. The establishment of flagship Fabrication laboratory of Bhutan (Fablab Bhutan) in 2017 is one such important milestones.

How to guide Beirut to become a Fab City?

I am now preparing a teaching program to introduce the students to the new recycling and ecology era by workshops and lectures for Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA) for the Architecture/Interior architecture/Urbanism program. Our laboratory site will be Lebanon.
Since it is now in a great need of this, this is the perfect timing for this program: Beirut City project. How to guide it to become a Fab City? How to transform it as a Smart Recycling City. Make the city locally productive, globally connected and self-sufficient. The Goal will be transparency and awareness. Our Focus will be the technology and Data/Information.
